Even after the latest technology and latest equipment used by HughesNet, it does not recommend for some sub-second time-sensitive types of Internet uses such as playing “twitch-games” and time-sensitive “online” trading. The latency (sub second delay) of satellite Internet access affects connection speeds. Latency refers to the time it takes for signals to travel to and from the satellite. This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server. While this sub second delay is usually unnoticeable, but in case of time-sensitive applications it may impact significantly. So we don’t recommend following applications for use over HughesNet:
- Playing twitch-games such as Quake, Diablo etc.
- Conferencing such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing.
- VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Internet phone service.
- Time-sensitive online trading.
In addition, running a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service network is not an ideal configuration. Although it works, your speed will be affected significantly. If you choose to run VPN over HughesNet service network, your data speed reduced by as much as 50 to 75 percent.
